As interest in Unitywater's 5.6 km Caloundra and Mountain Creek to Kawana Sewerage Pipelines project build, Queensland Urban Utilities, Noosa Shire Council, and Unitywater attended an insider tour of the $24.2 million major project last month.
Pipeline Drillers has accomplished a 315-metre crossing beneath the Mooloolah River to mark the second horizontal directional drill and the start of Unitywater's new 3.2 kilometre Mountain Creek to Kawana Sewerage Pipeline.
Pipeline Drillers has successfully replaced in record time, a 365 metre section of gas pipeline extending beneath Baffle Creek. The crew drilled and installed the new 100 millimetre steel pipe in eight days, finishing up before the spring deluge hit.
University of Sunshine Coast engineering and environmental science students visited Pipeline Drillers' Nicklin Way site yesterday, to learn how science, technology and engineering are being applied to Unitywater’s Caloundra Sewerage Pipeline Project.

'Doug' chews through rock for new sewerage pipeline

Meet Doug the rock reamer. He’s German, 2.2 metres long, weighs 2.8 tonnes and looks like he belongs with The Transformers. As the first of his kind in Australia, he is going to chew his way through extremely hard rock underneath Nicklin Way to help construct a new 2.5km sewerage pipeline to service the southern end of the Sunshine Coast.

Pipeline Drillers were called in by Rob Ward Electrical Contractors to complete a difficult undergrounding installation of 140mm HDPE electrical cables extending 230 metres through a private escarpment in Broken Head.
Pipeline Drillers has been awarded the principal contract for the Sole Gas Development Project. The $14 million stage one construction contract involves the bulk earthworks and horizontal directional drilling of the offshore crossing, with works now underway.

Wyuna Canal crossing, the maiden horizontal directional drill for Unitywater’s 3.2 kilometre Mountain Creek to Kawana Sewerage Pipeline Project is complete after piloting commenced just one month ago. This is the first of three HDD sections to be bored to a final diameter of 1200 millimetres, before installing the new 900 millimetre sewerage pipeline.
In its second season on the Longford to Long Island Point Pipeline Replacement project, Pipeline Drillers as specialist Horizontal Directional Drilling contractor has installed a total of 3,000 metres of 14 inch steel and 3,000 metres of 160mm HDPE at six locations in 30 days.
Pipeline Drillers achieved a majority vote on Wednesday December 21, 2016, signing a new multi-year enterprise bargaining agreement. The workplace agreement covers more than half of Pipeline Drillers’ valued employees, who secured an annual wage increase in line with CPI, in addition to a reassessment of all pay levels.

HDPE installation alongside Townsville's famous seaside foreshore

Partnering with principal contractor BMD Townsville for the Ross River Rising Main project, Pipeline Drillers has successfully installed 450 millimetres of HDPE by horizontal directional drilling alongside Townsville's iconic The Strand. This horizontal directional drill project encompassed a number of complex elements, a crossing under the Ross River and extremely hard rock conditions of up to 200 MPa.
For the first time, Pipeline Drillers has partnered with Brady Marine & Civil to successfully install two new 1,024 millimetre enveloper pipes and 800 millimetre HDPE pipe, for the Burnett River Discharge Pipeline project in Bundaberg.

Unitywater and contractor Pipeline Drillers today signed a $24.2 million contract to construct two major new sewerage mains on the Sunshine Coast. Construction of the new 5.6 kilometres of pipeline will be completed in 2017 by Pipeline Drillers, to improve the capacity and efficiency of the existing system in readiness for the growing region of Caloundra which is on track to double by 2031.
In just six days Pipeline Drillers has successfully redesigned, mobilised, drilled and installed 267 metres of 3 x 140 millimetre and 2 x 110 millimetre HDPE pipe using horizontal directional drilling under the Gateway Motorway.
Congratulations to all the team at Pipeline Drillers for the speedy completion of the final bore of 2050m at Brisbane Airport for Caltex Limited. The 2km 10" Steel Pipe was piloted, reamed and pulled back into place, in the impressive timeframe of 7 days.
Pipeline Drillers are now completing the demobilisation from the Weyba Creek project site. Remediation will soon commence with the successful completion of the HDD Project. Read about the project challenges in Trenchless Australasia's article here.
