Project Planning & Risk Management
Pipeline Drillers Group places strong emphasis on structured planning and early risk identification to ensure HDD works are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with project requirements. HDD installations frequently involve variable ground conditions, constrained work sites and critical infrastructure crossings where uncontrolled risks can significantly affect programme, cost and environmental outcomes. A disciplined planning approach is therefore central to maintaining operational control throughout the drilling process.
OUR HDD PROCESS
Pipeline Drillers Group approaches HDD planning through a structured process that typically includes:
-
Contract review and scope confirmation – verification of project requirements, delivery constraints and crossing objectives.
-
Ground and service data review – assessment of available geotechnical information, underground services and site conditions that may influence drilling methodology.
-
Drilling methodology development – preparation of a project-specific drilling approach considering bore alignment, ground conditions, environmental sensitivities and equipment requirements.
-
Programme development and resource planning – establishment of key milestones, sequencing of drilling and pipe installation activities, and allocation of plant, personnel and subcontractor resources.
-
Risk identification and control planning – identification of technical, environmental and operational risks with appropriate control measures and contingency planning incorporated into the methodology.
-
Procurement and subcontractor engagement – coordination of long-lead items, specialist subcontractors and supporting services required for delivery.
-
Pre-mobilisation readiness review – confirmation that plant, equipment, personnel and documentation are prepared for safe and controlled mobilisation.
-
Mobilisation – deployment of plant, equipment and crews to site in accordance with the approved programme.
This planning process ensures that drilling methodology, resourcing and project controls are aligned before works commence. Particular attention is given to ground conditions, existing underground services, site access constraints and environmental sensitivities associated with waterways and other protected environments.

SWMS DOCUMENTATION
Prior to mobilisation, project teams finalise key operational documentation including Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), environmental management plans and project-specific quality procedures. These documents establish the operational framework for the works and ensure that safety, environmental and quality requirements are clearly defined before drilling activities begin.
MONITORING
Throughout project delivery, drilling performance and site conditions are continuously monitored to ensure works remain aligned with the approved methodology. Parameters such as drilling progress, bore alignment and site conditions are regularly reviewed by the site leadership team, allowing adjustments to be made where ground conditions or operational constraints require refinement of the drilling approach.
This structured planning and risk management framework enables Pipeline Drillers Group to maintain control of HDD operations while responding effectively to changing ground conditions and site constraints, supporting consistent delivery outcomes for infrastructure clients.
