Onslow Desalination Plan

Austral | Onslow, WA | May – Oct 2025

Scope

Installation of desalination plant pipeline infrastructure using
HDD, including three parallel 660m bores for seawater
intake and a 965m pilot hole for the outfall pipeline.

Challenges

The works required precise bore alignment beneath the
seabed, including accurate pilot drill exits into casing
installed from a jack-up barge. GPS track, real-time gyro
measurements and expert steering were used to verify
trajectory and maintain positional accuracy throughout the
crossings.

Outcome

All four pilot bores were completed successfully, enabling
installation of the desalination plant pipelines. The works
were completed ahead of time and support a more reliable
drinking water supply for the Onslow area.
